A decade ago the farmhouse building site was clear led using a bulldozer. The benefit is was quick. The problem is it left stump holes that were hidden by compacted top soil.
Throughout each year, a few of these stump holes caves in – usually after a heavy rain because the water gradually washes the underside of the top soil down until the surface can no longer support anything.
I mark these with a PVC pole and when I have three or four poles in the lawn I fill a wheelbarrow (or two) with dirt and fill them in – retrieving the poles to start the process over again.
